“Every child is an artist. The challenge is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

I am an artist living and working in Ayrshire. I love the natural world and the flora and fauna around us, so creating pet and animal portraits is a real joy for me. I use the finest quality pastels to create my portraits which ensures they last for years. I have been painting and drawing from an early age but only in the last 20 years I been making a living with art. My insterest is not only in animals I paint landscapes, portraits, still life and anything else that catches my eye.

I create the portraits from your photographs. I can create any size of portrait, including multiple pets, draw a full body portrait or other composition, whatever that you would like in your artwork. I am very happy to discuss your requirements and offer you free quotations with no obligation. Use the contact form to get in touch with me and we can start to create a unique portrait of your pet.

The size will vary slightly with each portrait. The standard size is around 14" x 10" for a head and neck portrait, although these can be slightly smaller or larger depending on the size of pet and your requirements. When completed, the pastel portraits are mounted on artist's coloured mountboard and covered with protective film and cardboard backing as standard.

I use Wellington Gallery in Kilmarnock to do all of my mounting and framing work. Neil and staff are very good at what they do and will work with you to give you exactly what you ask for. They have many years of experience and will help you choose the right frame, if you decide to frame your portrait.

When handling the portrait, hold it by the edge of the mountboard and avoid touching the image directly. The pastel and graphite portraits are fixed to the drawing surface with an aerosol fixative.

Sending your photographs and requirements

You can send your photographs by email (preferred option) or by post. Photographs sent by post will be returned to you with your finished portrait. The resolution (quality) of your photographs should be the best you are able to produce. My general rule of thumb is, " if the eyes can be seen clearly in your photograph, then the quality should be good enough to work from".

If you are taking a photograph of your pet, try and take the photo outside in normal light and try to avoid strong sunshine as this creates harsh shadows and bleached colours. You will probably find that you may need to take quite a lot of photographs until you get the pose that you want. If your pet has a favourite toy, put it on the top of your head or shoulder while you are taking the photograph so that your pet is looking up at you. It may sound slightly odd, but this has worked for me many times.

Along with your photograph, let me know your requirements, whether you want a head and neck portrait or a full body portrait, or multiple pets in your portrait.
